A Big Hello

LGBT is a youth project specifically for young people who are 25 years old and younger, who either identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender or, are questioning their sexuality. We aim to provide a safe and supportive environment where people can meet, relax, talk, listen to music and participate in games and organised social and educational activities.

We meet every Monday in a centrally located venue where you will receive a warm welcome and be presented with an array of refreshment and relaxation options to cater for most tastes: tea, coffee, juice, biscuits (subs permitting), computers with internet access, music and DVD, games and a selection of information specifically designed for young people like you. There is of course that invaluable resource, the youth workers and volunteers who can offer a breadth of knowledge and a source of amusement.

Purpose

Many of the young people who attend come simply to meet others, share experiences and participate in activities (in a similar way to other youth groups) but what is so valued by them is the opportunity to meet other young LGBT people in a place without fear of discrimination and bullying.

Some of our members have experienced negative and sometimes hostile reactions to their sexuality; some are uncomfortable or even scared to express their sexuality to their families and, occasionally, even their friends so the project offers a vital time and place for them to be free to be themselves and explore how that feels.

Cost?

The project allows and encourages you to develop your self-esteem while offering appropriate guidance, information and support. While we aim to reduce barriers and offer low-cost and sometimes free activities, we do ask for a 50p weekly subscription from our members. This helps to keep us in tea, coffee, biscuits etc and if there is any left over, contributes to the cost of an outing.

How to get involved

Go to the contacts page and look at the ways you can get in touch.

Hope to see you at the group soon

York Youth Service

Originally called 1 in 10, the youth project has existed for over 10 years in various locations across the city of York and is the only group of its kind.

As part of the City of York Youth Service’s provision, the project is run by two paid youth workers and trained volunteers.

We have been in our latest venue since October 2007 and are very happy to be in a recently refurbished, smart, comfortable and disabled-accessible building.
